Below is a review of some nutrition basics we discussed in class. Each student will be asked to create his or her own wiki page showing their ideal balanced meal. Each food will need to be labeled in the correct food group. Students will then comment on other students' pages and discuss/critique his or her ideal meal.

Nutrition Basics
  • There are 6 food groups: fruits, vegetables, protein, grains, dairy, and fats/ oils.
  • You should eat a certain amount of foods from each food group every day (as you grow and get older, the amounts will increase):
    • Fruits: 2-4 servings
    • Vegetables: 3-5 servings
    • Protein: 2-3 servings
    • Grains: 6-11 servings
    • Dairy: 2-3 servings
    • Fats/Oils: Sparingly
  • Here are some examples of foods you can eat from each food group:
    • Fruits: apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, watermelon, strawberries, plums
    • Vegetables: broccoli, corn, carrots, potatoes, cauliflower, mushrooms, squash
    • Protein: beef, pork, chicken, nuts (peanuts, almonds, cashews), salmon, black beans, tuna
    • Grains: oatmeal, popcorn, rice, pasta, bread
    • Dairy: milk, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese
    • Fats/Oils: butter, candy, ice cream, french fries, donuts, cookies, cake
